The desert’s stark beauty and rugged landscape of canyons, mesas and vast plains provide a dramatic starting point for the medical center’s design.
The building’s simple tectonic forms finished with materials relating to the local tone and texture reflect the environment and utilize the sun to create shadows that allow people to sense the movement of time. The placement of every building element is intentional for maximum engagement with the outdoors.
The hospital’s expansive curtainwall is key to this strategy, along with enormous exterior apertures that maximize the views. The campus is built around modular components in which patient rooms are private, universal and adaptable. Circulation is organized along a central courtyard spine.
The Space Program is distributed around a courtyard for people to be outside in a natural setting with water features and native plants, just as flora and fauna collect in the bottom of the desert canyons.
Finish materials are minimal considering Copper, Galvanized Aluminum, Cast-in-Place Concrete, Mesquite wood and Glass as the base palette.
