Amgen

Split between three existing buildings, Amgen needed to move its entire management group into one location to maintain its competitive edge. One of the largest activity-based workplaces, the consolidated headquarters prioritizes health, views and daylight to spur collaboration and movement.

The project team used design computation to study access to daylight and views of nature, visibility from team to team, circulation patterns and even noise and acoustics to plan and optimize a next-generation workplace.

Employees work in one of several open-plan “neighborhoods,” arranged to blend together as work groups expand and contract. Early adoption of the activity-based workplace by executives set an example for the staff.

Social spaces and formal and informal meeting rooms are arranged near the central stair to maximize opportunities for employees to interact with each other and collaborate.

Parts of the atrium curtain wall were replaced with high-performance glass — supported laterally by glue-laminated Alaskan Cedar beams — to increase biophilic connections to natural light and views of nearby mountains.
